Tone is the attitude of an author toward his/her subject, audience, or story. What is Mark Twain's attitude toward his story and the characters in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer? The plot is a sequence of events that make up a story, with each event affecting the other. Every story needs a beginning, middle, and end. But to write a good story, one must include certain elements to keep the reader interested.

We will be analyzing the characters in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." If you've seen one of the movies, remember that we are analyzing and citing from Thurber's story, not the film adaptations. In order to read James Thurber's story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," click here. A "straight man" in a comedic duo is a comic foil, giving a contrast to the other character for the humor. Watch the video and see which character is the foil and which is the comedian.
